Summer Internship

Cultural Heritage Preservation Internship Job Description

Hours: 20+ hours/week (Tuesday through Friday, 10:00am to 4:00pm)

Duration: 8 weeks (June 20 through August 11, 2022)


Reports To: Archiving Sacred Spaces Fellow


Internship Overview:

This fast paced internship aims to introduce high school students (age 16+) to the many careers associated with Cultural Heritage Preservation. Most people are familiar with the memorial at George Floyd Square in Minneapolis, MN. Behind the scenes, two of the critical actions in keeping the offerings safe for future generation are the practices of archiving and preservation. Here each offering is inspected, cleaned, housed and described so that no offering is lost whether it be in the conservation lab, in an exhibition, in storage, or in transit. Interns will work with the offerings and protest art laid at the memorial of George Floyd, learn to clean, preserve, document and archive these creative expressions of hope and pain. Additionally and in culmination, interns will mount an exhibit of offerings at Pillsbury House + Theater, with an opening celebration the evening of August 11, 2022.


Interns will work alongside the Archiving Sacred Spaces Fellow, Caretakers and other Cultural Heritage professionals to learn about:

- How history continues to be made right here in Minneapolis.

- Historykeeping through archiving and cataloging.

- Practical techniques to handle and preserve objects for the future. 

- Documenting offerings and protest art with digital photography.

- Storytelling through building an exhibit and planning an opening event at Pillsbury House + Theater


Responsibilities and Duties:

- Train with the Archiving Sacred Spaces Fellow.

- Willingness to learn and apply new skills.

- Learn basic archival practices and preservation techniques.

     ~Inventory/catalog individual offerings.

     ~Clean and house offerings.

- Learn to document offerings using digital photography equipment and technology.

- Learn to safely handle and exhibit different kinds of materials and objects.

- Learn about curation decision-making, exhibit design and installation.

- Learn how to plan an exhibit opening event for your friends and family to attend.

- Attend tours of cultural heritage sites, especially those of importance to local Black history.

- Attend talks with local and national Black professionals in the Cultural Heritage Preservation industry.


Qualifications:

- Education: Enrolled in high school - completed sophomore year or higher

- No previous experience is required.

- Enthusiasm and curiosity a plus.

- Appreciation of protest art a plus.

- Must be available to work all 8 weeks of the internship.

Community Engagement Internship

Reports To: Executive Director


Job Overview: Grant-funded by MN Transform, the Community Engagement Intern will maintain and promote GFGM’s Pilgrimage Journey program. This duty entails outreach and marketing for Pilgrimage Journeys (including but not limited to outreach to potentially interested parties and website maintenance), coordination of Pilgrimage Journeys (including but not limited to intake of groups, coordination between pilgrims, guides, and theaters), support ongoing guide development (including the coordination of monthly guide meetings and BE G.R.E.A.T. entrepreneurial development training), and pilgrimage guide training. 


The professional in this position must be able to interact warmly with a diversity of people. They must know how to tap into the needs and desires of the George Floyd Square community and how to respond in kind. This position will require strong communication skills, judgment, flexibility, initiative, and decision making. This person will be a key member of the team.

Job Overview: Grant-funded by MN Transform, the Technology Intern will be responsible for learning FileMaker Pro and developing the software to fit the needs of the George Floyd Global Memorial. The Technology Intern will have an opportunity to contribute to the imagination of how FileMaker Pro technology can work throughout the organization.
